FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often do you need to change your oil?

You need to change your oil according to the mileage, or time, or both that the manufacturer has outlined for your vehicle. This interval, called the "Oil Change Interval" (OCI) is not a general rule and is specific to every car! On average, full-synthetic oil changes should be done every 5,000-8,000km with some exceptional vehicles recommended above 12,000km+.

Many manufacturers also recognize that not all driving conditions were made equal. Calgary drivers are used to extreme temperature swings, dusty and smoky air quality, nonideal road conditions, stop-and-go traffic, and more. But are you treating your car with the same care? Under severe driving conditions, many manufacturers recommend following a shorter OCI to keep the vehicle performing optimally. This applies to most Calgarian drivers, so be aware of what your car needs.

Consult your owner's manual, or give us a call to ask about your car today!

How much oil does my car take?

How much engine oil your car needs, also known as the engine oil capacity, is normally found inside your owner's manual. It is always specific to your vehicle's Year, Make, and Model. This amount is the amount of oil that should be inside your engine at any time.

Automotive engines, even healthy ones, always consume a small amount of engine oil as the vehicle is operated. That's why it is also very important to check your vehicle's engine oil dipstick to make sure that the correct amount of oil is inside your engine, even months after oil changes.

Can you use my own oil?

You are absolutely welcome to supply your own oil for our oil changes – however, be aware of the risks and responsibilities you carry when supplying your own engine oil.

GearUP takes care and attention to ensure that the engine oil we use fits your engine's correct viscosity, specification, certification, and requirements that the manufacturer has specified. We choose our engine oil carefully prior to your oil change to ensure this duty is completed. When you supply your own engine oil, that responsibility falls onto you; GearUP cannot guarantee that the oil you give us, even if it is in a sealed, original jug, is the correct oil to be used.

If you decide to supply your own engine oil, the service charge will instead be $49.75 plus applicable fees and taxes.

Do you use synthetic or conventional oil?

Full-synthetic engine oil is chemically engineered oil that provides superior quality, uniformity, cleaning, and lubrication for all vehicles. That is why GearUP exclusively supplies full-synthetic engine oil for our clients. Conventional engine oil, refined from crude oil, is generally cheaper and performs less reliably in extreme cold and hot temperatures.

Since Calgarian vehicles are exposed year-round to extreme temperatures on both ends of the scale, we recommend always using full-synthetic oils for your vehicle.

Older vehicles and high-mileage vehicles often see use with conventional oil as it is cheaper, however this puts your engine at risk of maintaining hidden leaks within the seals of the engine. It is common for damaged seals to only retain oil due to gummed-up interior surfaces, from worn engine oil.
